Freedom and Loneliness Born from Being Anonymous
VTubers operate as characters without showing their faces or real names. What kind of freedom does this 'anonymity' bring to the streamer, and at the same time, what kind of loneliness does it create? The freedom to speak one's true mind more easily because one's face is not shown, yet at the same time the loneliness of never being able to show one's 'true self' to anyone. For the person behind, is the character armor, a mask, or a device that liberates their true self? This question deeply explores the dual nature of anonymity in contemporary online society — freedom and loneliness — through the extreme example of VTubers. How much does being anonymous free a person, and how much does it isolate them?
Anonymity liberates humans from social constraints and gives freedom to express one's true self. VTubers provide the environment where one can most easily show their 'real self'.
Anonymity ultimately creates a state where 'no one can see your true self', imposing deep loneliness. Isolation awaits as the price of freedom.
Anonymity simultaneously generates freedom and loneliness. What matters is not choosing one over the other, but how to live with both in balance. VTubers are the experimental field for this.
-
While watching a VTuber who operates anonymously, have you ever thought 'I wonder what this person (the one behind) is really thinking?'
-
If you could talk to someone without showing your face or name, what would you want to talk about?
-
When do you feel 'free' because you are anonymous, and when do you feel 'lonely' because you are anonymous?
-
If the person behind can only speak their true feelings through the character, is that a happy thing or an unhappy thing?
-
In what situations do you yourself think 'I want to be anonymous'?
This topic is not for judging anonymity as 'good' or 'bad'. It is a quiet space for dialogue to simply acknowledge both sides of freedom and loneliness, and to understand each other's way of being online a little better.
- Anonymity
- Operating without revealing one's real name, face, or personal information. VTubers maintain extreme anonymity by operating only with a character name and avatar.
- The Person Behind
- The real human who plays the character. Under anonymity, they hide their 'true self' while expressing themselves through the character.
- Mask
- A role or persona used to hide one's true self. The VTuber character functions as a mask, providing both freedom and protection.
- True Feelings vs. Public Face
- True thoughts (honne) and socially acceptable expression (tatemae). Anonymity makes it easier to speak true feelings but can widen the gap with public face.
If you could talk to someone right now without showing your face or name, what would you want to talk about first?
Which do you feel is greater — the freedom gained by being anonymous, or the connections lost?
When the other person says they 'cannot show their real self', quietly imagine: 'There are also parts that are protected precisely because of anonymity.'
- How do fans react when the person behind reveals their 'true self'?
- Is a true feeling that can only be said anonymously really 'true'?
- What changes when a VTuber starts showing their face?
- How is a person behind who feels lonely being saved through the character?
- Does anonymity protect the 'true self' or keep it hidden forever?
