Have You Ever Thought About How Many Days You Could Survive on Your Own?

Have you ever specifically imagined in numbers 'how many days I could survive on my own'? This question not only forces a calm calculation of food, water, energy, and skill stocks, but also confronts you with your 'degree of dependence on civilization'. 3 days? 1 week? 1 month? That number reflects the reality of your preparation and how you see yourself if civilization collapses. Producing a number creates either anxiety of 'still not enough' or relief of 'surprisingly sustainable', changing the motivation and direction of preparation. People who avoid this question may actually be the most dependent.

01 Reality-Facing School

The position that one should face one's weaknesses by producing concrete numbers and then create specific preparation plans from there.

02 Mind-First School

The position that numbers are merely a guideline, and what matters is the 'will to survive' and 'adaptability'. Being too bound by numbers is putting the cart before the horse.

03 Community School

The position that 'how many days on my own' is an illusion. Humans originally live by helping each other. One should think in terms of community units rather than individual units.

  1. Honestly, how many days do you think you could survive on your own right now? What is the basis for that?

  2. What emotions arose when you produced that number (relief, anxiety, impatience, helplessness, etc.)?

  3. If that number was '3 days', how would you feel? What if it was '30 days'?

  4. When you imagine 'surviving on your own', how do you feel about your dependence on civilization and others?

Individual vsCommunity
Thinking about how many days one can last on one's own strengthens individualism. On the other hand, humans are originally beings who help each other. Is there a path to coexistence?
Numbers vsWill
Concrete numbers are important, but numbers alone cannot measure 'the meaning of living' or 'the power not to give up'.
Talk note

This theme is not for blaming yourself with numbers. It is a dialogue to calmly face the degree of your own dependence and think together about a freer and more flexible way of living.

Self-Sufficiency Period
The estimated number of days one can survive with one's own stocks and skills if external supplies are cut off.
Degree of Civilization Dependence
An indicator of how much daily life relies on social infrastructure, others, and systems. This question visualizes it.
Ice breaker

Please answer honestly. How many days do you think you could survive on your own right now?

Deep dive

When you produced that number, what feelings did you have? How are those feelings affecting your preparation?

Bridge

While listening to the other person's number, try imagining 'What can I do to help extend that number?'

  • How to turn the 'impatience' created by producing numbers into energy
  • How to relate to people who are at '0 days' (those who have prepared nothing)
  • Realistic steps to extend the self-sufficiency period
  • How not to lose the joy of daily life by being too bound by numbers
  • Why the imagination of 'surviving on my own' actually connects to the imagination of 'living with someone'
