Is There Such a Thing as Over-Preparing?

What does 'over-preparing' refer to? By what standard — physical quantity, psychological burden, or social impact — do we judge something as 'too much'? This question re-examines whether an optimal point of preparation exists, or whether preparation is always driven by an infinite sense of 'not enough.' It reconsiders the very concept of 'sufficiency' in modern society through extreme examples from prepper culture.

01 Optimal-Point Theory

There exists an 'ideal' amount of preparation. Beyond that point, the quality of daily life declines and it becomes harmful to mental health.

02 Infinite-Desire Theory

Human anxiety is bottomless, and the concept of 'enough' does not exist in preparation. Over-preparation is actually an expression of the feeling that 'it is still not enough.'

Whether something is 'over-preparation' depends on the context of the individual, era, and region. What is excessive for one person may be the bare minimum for another.

  1. Have you ever thought 'this might be over-preparing'? What did you feel at that moment?

  2. Have you ever felt the moment when you thought 'I have prepared enough'? What did that feeling feel like?

  3. Have you ever seen someone else's extreme preparation and thought 'that's too much'? What was the reason?

Quantity vsQuality
Can increasing the 'quantity' of preparation coexist with maintaining the 'quality' of daily life?
Reason vsAnxiety
Is over-preparation the result of rational judgment or the result of being driven by the emotion of anxiety?
Talk note

This topic is not about deciding the 'correct amount of preparation.' It is a space for dialogue that respects each person's sense of 'this is enough' and gently watches over each other's choices.

Over-Preparation
A state in which one expends more resources, time, and mental energy on crisis preparation than necessary, thereby lowering the quality of daily life.
Sufficiency
The state of feeling 'this is enough.' Includes material, psychological, and social balance.
Compulsiveness
A psychological state in which one repeatedly performs the same action to alleviate anxiety. Often lies behind over-preparation.
Ice breaker

Please recall one recent moment when you thought 'this is enough.'

Deep dive

If the concept of 'over-preparing' disappeared from this world, how do you think your life would change?

  • Can the very phrase 'over-preparing' become an act of violence that denies someone else's values?
  • How does the standard of 'sufficiency' change in the era of climate change and pandemics?
  • How can one make the decision to stop preparing?
