Tuning (chōsei) is the act of adjusting minute parameters — pitch, timing, dynamics, breathing, etc. — on voice synthesis engines like Vocaloid to transform mechanical sounds into human-like singing with emotion. It is not mere correction but a creative process of 'breathing life' into the voice. This occupies a unique layer of creativity distinct from composition, lyrics, or arrangement, bridging machine and human expression.
Tuning is akin to performance. The tuner 'acts out' the melody written by the composer like a voice actor.
Co-creation between the author and the software, drawing out limits and possibilities to birth new expressions.
More of a high-level technical task than art; a craftsman-like creation requiring precision and patience.
