Where Does Inspiration Come From?
Inspiration refers to the phenomenon where creative ideas suddenly emerge. In the context of web design, it questions the source of the 'flash of insight' behind every creative decision—layout composition, color selection, typography combinations, interaction design, and more. Does it come from personal memories and experiences, influence from other designers' works, observation of nature and daily life, or from the depths of the unconscious? This question deeply explores the meaning of originality in design, the mechanisms of creativity, and how designers bring forth something new.
The view that inspiration arises from the designer's internal experiences, emotions, and memories. The individual's inner world is the source of creation, with external stimuli serving merely as catalysts.
The view that inspiration is triggered by external inputs from the surrounding environment, other works, nature, and culture. The designer is a receptor who processes stimuli into ideas.
The view that inspiration comes from beyond the individual's unconscious, from humanity's shared archetypes and symbols. Universal motifs and patterns in design are rooted here.
The view that inspiration is the product of long-term preparation and accumulated effort combined with accidental encounters. Symbolized by Louis Pasteur's 'fortune favors the prepared mind'.
-
When was the last time you felt inspired? What was the trigger?
-
Have you ever seen someone else's design and thought 'That's it!'? Why did it resonate at that moment?
-
Have you experienced periods when inspiration wouldn't come? How did you deal with it?
-
Have you ever drawn design ideas from nature or everyday scenery? What specifically?
-
Have you ever realized that an idea that came to you unconsciously was actually based on something you saw or experienced in the past?
-
Do you have any habits or methods to 'summon' inspiration rather than just waiting for it?
This topic is not about seeking the 'correct answer' to inspiration. It is a space where quietly reflecting on the sources of creation within yourself and sharing with others can become an opportunity for your relationship with design to shift slightly.

- Creativity
- The ability to generate new and valuable ideas or solutions. In web design, it refers to unique expressions that enhance user experience.
- Unconscious
- The realm of the mind that is not conscious. Much of inspiration is said to arise from here.
- Influence

- Originality
- Uniqueness unlike anything else. Questions how inspiration leads to unique design.
Please bring to mind one moment when you recently felt inspired. Tell me about the sensation and the trigger at that time.
If all sources of inspiration were external stimuli, where do you think the 'individuality' of your design would remain?
As you listen to the other person talk about their sources of inspiration, quietly imagine 'how they are incorporating that source into their own design'.
