Does 'Atmosphere' Exist in Internet Spaces as Well?
The 'atmosphere' felt in physical spaces (cafes or hot springs) is the non-verbal air of the place woven from smells, sounds, temperature, light, and people's presence. This question asks whether such 'atmosphere' also resides in internet spaces (websites, SNS, virtual spaces) that exist only through screens and data. If it does, what creates it and how is it felt? It is a sensory and philosophical question about how design, interaction, community, and culture create the 'air of the place.'
The position that clear atmosphere also exists on the internet. Color tone, typography, animation, and community tone comprehensively create the 'air of the place.'
The position that because the internet lacks physical five senses, true atmosphere does not exist. What is felt is merely visual information or data.
The position that digital extends and reproduces the atmosphere of physical space. VR and high-quality UI/UX create immersion and atmosphere close to physical space.
The position that internet atmosphere varies greatly by cultural sphere. Japanese culture of 'reading the air' appears strongly in digital space, while the West prefers more explicit expression.

Where do you think the atmosphere of a physical cafe or hot spring and the atmosphere of internet spaces are similar and where are they different?
-
What design elements do you think the feeling 'I calm down when I enter this site' comes from?

Do you think there is 'air of the place' in SNS timelines or chat rooms?

In immersive spaces like VR or the metaverse, do you think you can feel atmosphere close to physical space?
-
What elements do you think break the atmosphere of the internet (e.g., too many ads, slow loading)?
This theme is a dialogue to re-feel digital space not as 'just an information tool' but as 'a place where emotions reside.' By putting into words the difference between the atmosphere of physical space and digital space, it is a space to together discover the emotional possibilities of web design.
- Atmosphere
- The air or emotional tone floating in a place. In physical space it is felt through the five senses, but in digital space it is felt indirectly through visuals, sound, and interaction.
- Immersion
- The sense of 'being' in that space. A key element in whether atmosphere is born on the internet.
- Non-Verbal Communication
- The air of the place conveyed through non-verbal elements (color, movement, white space, sound, response speed). The main bearer of atmosphere in digital space.
- Digital Space
- Virtual places such as websites, apps, SNS, VR. Because there are no physical constraints, the way atmosphere is created is diverse.
- Air of the Place
- The emotional and atmospheric context shared by a group or space, especially valued in Japanese culture. The culture of 'reading the air' is also rooted on the internet.
- Interaction Design
- Designing the system's response to user actions. The speed of response and animation greatly affect the atmosphere.
Please name one website or app where you felt 'this space feels good somehow' and try to express that momentary sensation in words.
If there was no real atmosphere on the internet, what would we lose?
